Favorites, 2016

Back in the old days of the Notes, I used to write a lot more about music, movies, and books, and I would every so often post updated lists of my absolute favorites of things.  Not due to any pressing interest from the public, of course–mostly just because it’s fun for me, and also because having such a blog post can be quite handy during discussions online; I can just link someone to the entry to aid in a discussion of favorites.

Of course this is not to be confused with my annual “Favorite Music” list, where I detail my favorite music released in the previous calendar year; these lists detail my current all-time favorites, which are (like yours, of course) constantly changing.

Looking back at my entries, it appears as though I haven’t done a big posting of lists since 2012, so I’ll make this one fairly comprehensive.  All of these lists have changed since 2012–some very little, some quite dramatically:

My 16th Favorite Song of All-Time

…and my 16th favorite song of all-time is:

“Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman

To me, few songs simply drip with emotion in the way that “Fast Car” does.  While the narrator’s story is something completely unlike my own, I have no problem imagining my life having taken a similar course.  Chapman’s narrator has lived a difficult life, and she tells of it in straight-forward fashion, but nuances in the lyrics tell of an immense sorrow just below the surface, an aching for relief, an interminable wait for life to come into sharp focus.  A perfectly crafted song.

One Month in Erie

Today marks one month exactly since the first night I spent in Erie.  It’s been an AWESOME month!!!  I thought I’d do a bit of recapping.  Here is a sampling of the totally rad things I’ve done in that month:

1.  Made three trips out onto Presque Isle, a peninsula that juts into Lake Erie.
2.  Went to a zoo.
3.  Went to an art museum.
4.  Developed a newfound love for Tracy Chapman
5.  Watched three “tribute bands”, each playing pretty awesome sets of “grunge band” music
6.  Toured the historic brig Niagara, an actual wooden warship from the War of 1812
7.  Went to Niagara Falls
8.  Hung out at a free amusement park
9.  Scaled the lookout tower at Dobbins Point
10.  Pointlessly hung around a rib fest
11.  Found a record store, a comic book store, and a Sheetz
12.  Attended a minor league baseball game
13.  Taught myself how to hang all different kinds of window coverings
14.  Strung outdoor Christmas lights on my balcony
15.  Frankly, I think I could list about 50 things here.  I can’t believe it’s only been a month!  I am having such an amazing time!!!!
